  4.     The recruits stare in horror.

  7.         Oh, God... uh... MEDIC !
  8.  
  9.     Zim arrives with Bronski on the bounce.
  10.  
  11.                 ZIM
  12.         Rico, you are relieved of squad command.
  13.         Levy, McIntire you will escort private Rico
  14.         to the C.O.'s Office.
  15.  
  16.     The recruits watch Johnny leave, stare aghast at their dead comrade.
  17.     No one looks at Djana'd, who stands alone sobbing.
  18.  
  19. 75    INT    C.O.'S OFFICE - DAY - JOHNNY
  20.  
  21.     stands before the C.O. braced by Katrina and Ace. Zim and the C.O.  are
  22.     both saddened by the proceedings.

  25.         Rico, did you give the recruit permission
  26.         to remove his helmet ?

  28.                 JOHNNY
  29.         Sir, yes, sir. Breckinridge reported a
  30.         helmet malfunction, and I asked him
  31.         to show it to me, sir.

  34.         Are you rated to repair a Marauder
  35.         power suit, Rico ?
  36.  
  37.                 JOHNNY
  38.         Sir, no, sir.

  40.                 C.O.
  41.         Then why did you order your man to 
  42.         remove his helmet during a live fire
  43.         exercise ?

  46.         Sir, I needed everyone in my squad

  53.         You may, of course, demand trial by

  66.     Zim looks out the window. Djana'd, dressed for travel, in civilian clothes,
  67.     crying as she heads off down Washout Lane.

  70.         Sergeant, we've lost two recruits
  71.         over this incident already...
  72.         is there any possibility of salvaging
  73.         this man ?

  76.         I believe so, sir.

  79.         Alright. We'll try administrative
  80.         punishment. Until then you are 
  81.         confined to your quarters, Rico.

  83. 76    INT    BARRACKS - SUNSET - JOHNNY

  85.     looks out the window to the parade ground where a POST has been
  86.     erected. The recruits look up as Zim enters.

  89.         Alright, let's go, Rico.

  91.     Johnny takes off his shirt. Ace who now holds the chevrons of squad
  92.     leader, watches, feels bad for his pal.

  94. 77    EXT    PARADE GROUND - SUNSET - THE RECRUITS
  95.  
  96.     stand with recruits from other platoons. Johnny is led to the post and 
  97.     strung up as the C.O. reads the charge.
  98.

  100.         For incompetence of command, for
  101.         failure to abide by safety regulations
  102.         in a live fire exercise, for negligence 
  103.         which contributed to the death of a
  104.         teammate...

  106.     Zim steps up to Johnny, offers him a red rubber mouthpiece.

  108.                 ZIM
  109.         Bite on this. It helps. I know.

  112.         ... recruit trainee John Rico is sentenced
  113.         to administrative punishment. Ten lashes.
  114.  
  115.     Johnny takes it in his mouth. His tear away shirt is torn away. Johnny
  116.     stands at the post alone. Corporal Bronski, a big man with an unhappy
  117.     task, unrolls his whip.

  120.         You may carry out the sentence.
  121.  
  122.                 BRONSKI
  123.         One.
  124.     
  125.     CRACK !    Johnny's face wrenched by pain, spontanous tears, a terrible
  126.     sound stifled by the bright red mouthpiece.

  130.     
  131.     CRACK !    Again. Dizzy flinches for Johnny.

  136.     CRACK !    Ace looks away.

  157.     works alone on the empty bridge. She yawns. Zander brings coffee for himself
  158.     and Carmen.

  162.         always seems to last forever.

  165.         Oh, I don't know... Depends on who you
  166.         are spending it with.

  168.     He caresses her hair. She kisses his hand. Zander notices the plot map.

  171.         Profile's wrong... there.

  174.         No, I replotted the course. It's more
  175.         efficient this way.

  178.         Three weeks aboard a starship and you

  184.     Zander slides into his chair, runs a check.

  208.     Zander turns his chair so they are very close, moves a finger along
  209.     her hand, up her arm and playfully around her breasts.

  212.         I have a feeling about us. We're good
  213.         together, way ahead of the curve in 
  214.         every department. I seem to be able to
  215.         anticipate your needs. 
  216.         You know what I want...

  218.     Carmen grabs him between his legs.

  223.     Zander pulls her to him and they kiss passionately. She brteaks it off,
  224.     gets serious for amoment.

  233.     They start to caress again when suddenly ALARMS sound. Captain 
  234.     Deladier appears on the hot screen, still waking up.

  240.         Captain, we are in the path of an unidentified
  241.         object moving at near light speed...

  243.     Carmen and Zander frantically check their displays.

  249.         THERE !    GRAVITY FIELD... IT'S BIG !

  258.     ASTEROID tumbles directly towards them at terrific speed.

  263.     Carmen breaks glass that reads EMERGENCY RETROS, arms the switch 
  264.     within and fires the rockets.

  268.     torques to one side. The asteroid grazes the ship, cutting ahuge gash
  269.     in Athena's hull. Ice and rock travelling in ist wake shreds
  270.     COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT.

  274.     Zander brace themseves as diamond hard particles pound the front screens.
  275.     The ship continues to tumble.

  277. 82    EXT    ATHENA - FLIGHT DECK - A FIGHTER

  279.     loses it's mooring, tumbling into other craft, explosions ripping the deck.

  281. 83    INT    ATHENA -VARIOUS - NIGHT CYCLE - CREWMEN

  283.     are sucked into space. Others hang on frantically as automatic doors
  284.     seal Athena's wound and their fates.

  288.     Deladier arrives on the bridge, now crowded as other FLIGHT OFFICERS
  289.     rush to their stations. Zander's going through star charts.

  292.         Where'd it come from ?
  293.  
  294.                 ZANDER
  295.         Trajectory indicates it came out of 
  296.         the Arachnid Quarantine Zone.
  297.  
  298.                 DELADIER
  299.         Number 4, contact Fleet and tell 'em
  300.         there's a loose asteroid headed their way.
  301.  
  302.                 COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER
  303.         Communications are down, ma'am.
  304.  
  305.                 DELADIER
  306.         Engineering. Damage assessment.
  307.  
  308.                 ENGINEERING OFFICER
  309.         Hull's compromised. 
  310.         We're lucky to be alive, ma'am.

  312.     Deladier notices Carmen staring at a monitor, stunned. A DEAD
  313.     CAP TROOPER trails in the wreckage of the flight deck.

  316.         Good work, Number 1. You'll do.

  323.     wears his civilian clothes, pcks as the other recruits get ready for the
  324.     day's training. No one says anything. He moves stiffly, careful of his
  325.     back.

  349.     A nearby VU-PHONE lights up. The screen flashes:        RINGING
  350.     His mother appears when she picks up the other end.

  364.     The screen splits as Johnny's father activates an extension.

  369.     Johnny's mother makes a face to shut him up.

  400.     The sky in Buenos Aires seems to darken perceptively. Johnny's
  401.     mother looks out the window.

  412.     The transmission ends abruptly. A phone company logo appears:
  413.     TRANSMISSION TERMINATED.

  417.         to atmospheric interference. Please try your
  418.         call again later.

  420.     Johnny zips his duffel, hefts it gingerly over his shoulder.

  426.         You take the stroll down Washout Lane,
  427.         you're only proving one thing, Johnny.

  436.     Dizzy turns on her heel and marches away.

  450.     The C.O. and Zim turn to other things. Johnny picks up his duffel and heads

  455.     walks alone, sad. A skimmer hums by overhead and he looks after it.
  456.     Out across the parade ground he sees the glint of Marauder power
  457.     suits as recruits tumble the obstacle course.

  459. 88    EXT    WASHOUT LANE -- DAY - JOHNNY

  461.     reaches the little white fence that leads to the transporter. He turns
  462.     back for one last look and notices people running to the
  463.     Comminications shack. Kitten Smith runs by.

  466.         Hey, Kitten, what's going on ?

  469.         It's war !

  508.     illustrates the insect treachery.
